Interior design trends follow a cyclical pattern, similar to the way fashion trends rise and fall. The interior design trends of the 1970s will serve as a growing source of inspiration for designers in 2023.
The inclusion of gentle curves and comfortable seating in interior design not only captures the visual style of the 70s, but also nurtures an atmosphere of comfort and satisfaction, resulting in a friendly and delightful environment.

In a move away from mass-produced items, there’s a growing appreciation for artisanal and handcrafted furniture and decor. Unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that showcase craftsmanship and authenticity are highly sought after. This trend celebrates the beauty of imperfections and adds a personal touch to interior spaces. 

With an increased awareness of environmental issues, sustainable design has become a prominent trend. People are opting for eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient appliances, and sustainable furniture made from recycled or upcycled materials. Incorporating renewable energy sources like solar panels and using low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints are also common practices.
Individuals will start investing in products of superior quality that can endure the passage of time. Instead of purchasing inexpensive items for a temporary appearance, people will opt for more careful choices for their home that will aim for longevity and timelessness.

Organic Shapes & Biophilic Design

 Biophilic design, which focuses on incorporating elements of nature into interior spaces, has gained significant popularity. This trend emphasizes the use of natural materials, such as wood and stone, as well as incorporating indoor plants, living walls, and natural lighting to create a soothing and harmonious environment.

Curves in home decor, such as with curved sofas, is an effective way to create a serene atmosphere and promote mental and physical well-being. The circular shapes and curved lines that resemble safety and tranquility and reflect the external environment attract our brain’s attention. The growing desire to incorporate nature into our everyday routines is giving rise to the use of curved lines and gentle edges to mimic the natural, comfortable flow found in the environment. This contrasts with the rigid and defined feel often present in other geometric spaces.

This year, there will be a strong trend towards using curved door frames, thresholds, and ceilings. Arches remind us of a period of architecture from the past and create a feeling of agelessness and gentleness.

Technology Integration

Smart home technology continues to evolve and has become an essential part of modern interior design. From voice-activated assistants to automated lighting and smart appliances, integrating technology seamlessly into the home is a trend that is likely to continue in 2023.

From soundbars to smart TVs wired with Alexa and Google assistant technology, the living room is all about media integration.
Smart kitchen devices are in demand to make the cooking process more convenient. From fridges that detect what food you’re running low on to microwave ovens that work with a simple voice command, these appliances redefine the cooking process.
Smart beds, blackout shades, and noise-canceling technology will be a standard feature in future bedroom designs. You’ll be able to control room temperature, lighting and even bed incline with voice commands or an app on your phone.

Wood

The use of warmer wood tones and an earthy colour palette in furniture and fabric will continue to rise. Interiors will have a polished appearance and texture due to an increase in high-gloss wood, as opposed to matte wood finishes.

As we witness the benefits of being more connected with nature, we turn to the growing popularity of biophilic design as a means of integrating elements of the natural world into our homes for added comfort. Incorporating bamboo, cork, and sisal into a space can augment its texture and charm through the use of organic materials.

Floors

Concrete floors will be returning in 2023. There are all sorts of techniques when it comes to living with concrete, from raw to polished, coloured and most recently with microtopping overlay.

Forget those 1970s connotations of orange cork tiles, cork flooring is back, and better than ever. Cork always adds a note of warmth to a scheme. Cork has natural thermal properties which means it is great for heat insulation and can be a much cheaper alternative.

Alternatives to using complete, book-matched marble slabs include mosaic and terrazzo.
Terrazzo tile has experienced shifts in popularity over time, however, it is now unquestionably trendy in 2023. This year, any bathroom that showcases mosaic tiles, regardless of the complexity of the design, will be stylish and fashionable.

Textured Tiles

There is a prevalence of tiles that are both textured and three-dimensional. Tactile tiles can provide any surface with a handmade and organic look, including floors, backsplashes, shower stalls, fireplaces, and even entire walls, with slight differences and changes in texture.

Zellige   tiles that are handmade and have a textured surface are currently popular, but they have been fashionable for some time. Originally from Morocco, these tactile tiles have only picked up in popularity. 

At the moment, decorative tiles are also a big trend to give a space some personality and creativity. Look for original reclaimed tiles with colours and patina that resemble the vintage tiles found in Southern Spain. Use independently or in combination with single colour tiles for a more understated appearance.

Rugs

Neutral rugs will continue to exist, but there is a noticeable trend towards rugs now serving as functional pieces of artwork for the floor. These rugs will become a permanent feature in the household – a type of artwork that also needs to be carefully selected and arranged to achieve the ideal ambiance.

The floor is unquestionably dominated by eye-catching patterns of unconventional rugs that have been intentionally designed. These living room rugs not only feature a captivating print but they are also reshaping the concept of design, quite literally, as all of them have an unconventional shape. Presently, there is a significant increase in the popularity of vibrant-colored rugs, particularly those with abstract and floral designs. It appears that individuals are no longer interested in taking cautious approaches.

Maximalism

Although minimalistic designs have been the popular choice for a while, maximalist designs will regain popularity in 2023. The current popular style incorporates vibrant colours, intricate designs, and different textures that create a diverse and creative atmosphere in interiors. The fundamental aspects of maximalist design are incorporating bold statement pieces, layering various patterns and combining different styles.

Metal Accent

Metal details are becoming more popular in interior design and small decorative items, including side tables, coffee tables, and even radiators. Metallic embellishments are an amusing approach to insert an exclusive and surprising element into a space. These adornments enhance visual appeal and contribute an extra dimension of tactile quality to the overall appearance of the room. 

Music & Craft Room

Do you recall the period of confinement during the pandemic? If you weren’t making bread, you were either expanding your music collection and exploring new musicians, or embracing the idea of having dedicated rooms to express ourselves in, which has become more desirable in the post-Covid era. This indicates a space for music that contains a phonograph, storage for vinyl records, a cabinet for beverages, and comfortable seating for relaxation.

If you’re not fond of music, you can create a separate room for yourself where you can engage in activities like sewing, knitting, crocheting, or painting. If you furnish it with a desk, ample storage, and a comfortable chair for reading, you can create an area that mirrors your interests.

After spending a lot of time in communal areas due to the pandemic, the inclination in 2023 is to spend more time in personal or private spaces.

Designer Dining Room

The pandemic has led to the emergence of a new interior design trend for dining rooms in 2023, known as the designer dining room. Simply having a table and chairs in this area is no longer sufficient. The zone is evolving into a complete experience.

After utilizing our tables for various purposes like homework, Zoom calls, and other activities during the lockdown period, we are now liberated and excited to transform the dining room into an impressive space.
This zone is now receiving increased expenditure. By upgrading the table, cozy chairs, distinctive lighting, decorations for the walls, impressive artwork, floor coverings, and high-end plates and utensils.

Our goal for 2023 is to enjoy the experience of dining at an incredible restaurant, but without physically leaving our location.

Spa Inspired Bathrooms or Spathrooms

Influenced by the increasing popularity of creating spaces at home dedicated to self-care rituals, ‘spathrooms’, also known as spa-inspired bathrooms, are expected to be a prominent trend in 2023.

There is a strong argument to suggest that bathrooms are the most symbolic room in a house, and recently there has been a significant increase in the desire for bathrooms that resemble a spa and serve as a personal refuge. When we design a master suite, we treat the en-suite as a natural extension of the bedroom, using the same color scheme to ensure a smooth transition between the two spaces.

To create a luxurious ambiance, we seek to counterbalance the inherently sterile nature of bathrooms by incorporating warm textures and fabrics.

Luxury Outdoors

Overall, the luxury outdoor interior trend in 2023 will focus on creating comfortable, sophisticated, and seamlessly integrated outdoor spaces that offer a true escape and a luxurious extension of the indoor living areas.

Spaces will utilize high-quality, sustainable, and natural materials such as teak, rattan, wicker, and stone. These materials not only add a touch of luxury but also create a connection with nature. Outdoor spaces will be designed to function as extensions of the indoor living areas. This trend includes creating comfortable seating areas with plush sofas, armchairs, and coffee tables. These spaces may also feature outdoor fireplaces, rugs, and decorative lighting.

Alfresco dining and entertaining will be taken to the next level with fully equipped outdoor kitchens. Outdoor dining areas will be designed to accommodate large gatherings and feature magnificent dining furniture and statement lighting.

Colour Palette of the Year

Earthy Tones and Warm Neutrals 

In terms of colour schemes, earthy tones and warm neutrals are on-trend in 2023. Shades like terracotta, olive green, deep browns, and warm grays are popular choices. These colours create a cozy and inviting atmosphere while providing a sense of connection to the natural world.
